Chicky Crystal is a graphic novel that tells the story of how a little orphan chick grows up in a condo in Hawaii and moves to an organic farm in the country where she has all kinds of adventures.
Bianca found Chicky one day when her and her father Dr. John, were driving through the country on an old back road. Meanwhile, a mother hen and her brood were rapidly crossing the road in hopes of escaping from a vicious mongoose. One little chick froze in the middle when it saw the mongoose creeping up on it. The mother hen was already on the other side of the road frantically waving encouragement. The mongoose was about to pounce on the little chick when all of a sudden Dr. John’s car came out of nowhere.
Bianca saw the chick and screamed. Dr. John slammed on his brakes and stopped right before he was about to run them over. Everyone scattered and ran for cover. The mongoose and the chick froze and for a moment they looked at each other and breathed a sigh of relieve in recognition of the close call. Dr. John jumped out of the car and scooped up Chicky. The mongoose ran away.
He got back in the car and gave the little trembling chick to Bianca. It was love at first sight and from that day on Chicky and Bianca were best friends. They went everywhere together. To the beach, the aquarium, birthday parties, grocery shopping; Bianca even brought Chicky to school for show and tell. Life was grand.
Two things happened that changed Chicky’s life forever. She started to get too big for the cage and Dr. John and Bianca had to move. Dr. John had lived in the condo for 20 years and when he got the moving notice he was sad and very frantic. How was he going to move all his plants, where was he going to go and what was he going to do with Bianca’s pet chicken?.
